For those of you who are not familiar with the Braunvieh breed this page is for you. At Mirror Image Farm we are excited about Braunvieh, what they have done for us and what they can do for your program. Whether it's the feedlot or the show ring you'll see the results. After months of researching and visiting with folks with Braunvieh, we were more than convinced what the Braunvieh would bring to our program. They are so easy to work with, put muscle and weight to our weanlings, and the cross vigor to develop great club calves and feedlot profits. It isn't the color of the hair coat but the quality of the steak on the table and dollars in your pocket that count! With the emphasis today on less use of hormones, steroids, and growth enhancers it is important that strong genetics be used to achieve results. That's where we think Braunvieh will excel.
The most common question asked of Braunvieh breeders is "What is a Braunvieh?" Braunvieh is not a crossbred or a composite but, instead, may be one of the oldest pure breeds in the world. Braunvieh was originally developed in Swiss Alps. Today they can be found in over 60 countries from the tropics to the Artic Circle. They will perform in literally any environment. Noted for their docile attitude, great milking and maternal traits, and high fertility they continue to make positive input towards profitability for those incorporating Braunvieh into their programs. Dark pigmentation of the eyes and udders nearly eliminate the worry of pinkeye or sun/snow burned udders.
Braunvieh and Braunvieh-cross cattle have, in recent years, been recognized for their outstanding feedlot performance and superior carcass characteristics producing carcasses with a high quality grade and low yield grade. Braunvieh, while moderate in size and frame, both females and bulls will pass on their muscle, superior quality grade, growth rate and efficient feed conversion to their progeny. Once more, putting Braunvieh genetics in your crossbreeding program can provide Hybrid Vigor at the following rates:
| Increased growth of crossbred calves: 4 to 11% | |
| Increased weaning weight due to more milk: 4 to 11% | |
| Increased Fertility: 10 to 15% | |
| Increased Calf Survival: 10 to 15% |
